Rainwater harvesting is a great solution to prevent runoff and erosion, a good source of clean free water for your plants, and can be used for gray water applications like cleaning your car, filling a water feature or pond, bird baths, and the list goes on!
There are two main types of rainwater harvesting systems, active and passive. Active rainwater harvesting stores water in man made structures like rain barrels or cisterns. Passive rainwater harvesting uses techniques like rainwater gardens, earthworks, and other earthen systems to "stop, drop, and spread" the rainwater into the landscape naturally, allowing the ground to hold the water for plants' later use.
